Audio visual technologies that would help promote active and experiential learning.

Leeds University Business School is a business school located within the University of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Its mission is to impact business and society through teaching and research.

  • Location: Leeds, UK

  • Sector: Education

  • Project Duration: Multi-phase, completed on-time and within budget

  • Scope: To create a modern, innovative learning suite that would enable lectures to be more interactive and collaborative: a departure from the usual tiered lecture halls and seminar rooms.

Project Brief

As part of the University Digital Strategy for Student Education, the University of Leeds recently rolled out a number of refurbished central teaching spaces across its estates. One such teaching space, The Leeds University Business School, was relocated to the Charles Thackrah building.

Aiming to break from the traditional teaching mould, the building would feature one large flat-floored collaborative teaching space – a departure from the usual tiered lecture halls and seminar rooms.

This new space was designed to be modern and innovative, unlike any other on campus. The client wanted to create a new learning suite that would enable lectures to be more interactive and collaborative, which in turn would encourage better group working.

AV2000 were invited to explore audio visual technologies that would help promote active and experiential learning, allowing the students to lead their own educational experience.

As specialists in the professional design, planning, installation and commissioning of audio visual systems, we were able to deliver state-of-the-art AV technology within each desk space - the first of its kind at the university.

  • Castable technology enables students to share different devices to the main screen through the integrated connectivity options within the worktop and the mast.

  • Each desk mast features an integrated screen bracket for the screen with a shroud

  • This is also branded with a vinyl print of the Business School’s identity band.

  • Each table features a camera fixed to the top of the screen to capture lectures or video content as required

  • A control panel allows users to select a group’s screen to share/cast to all other tables.

  • The tables now have power data modules containing x2 USB ports and x2 sockets in the worktop.

  • A central lectern was installed in the centre of the room so that the teacher is accessible to all students, allowing greater flexibility and more interaction.

  • The lectern also provides the teacher with access to each table and the ability to easily switch between traditional teaching to collaborative activities at the push of a button.

Results

The deployment of this state-of-the-art technology within the revamped Business School has been admired by many other staff in the University and is now held up as an example of how to create modern learning spaces:

  • The enhanced learning space for the students has helped create a new and improved dynamic for learning

  • The students are now fully engaged in lectures and feel empowered by being able to control the way that they choose to work.

  • New AV technologies have created a wow factor across the wider campus.
